- Inflatable pillows need to be blown up and secured by the opening to make sure they don’t deflate while you’re sleeping, and they are usually not made for the most comfortable sleep since they don’t adapt to your body unlike microbead and memory foam pillows do.
- Microbead pillows contain small beads that move around to adapt to your movements, and memory foam pillows are the best you can get if you want enough support for your neck.
- Memory foam follows the contours of your neck and head and remain firm and comfortable the entire time.
Consider your needs and preferences when shopping for travel neck pillows. Memory foam pillows are a little more costly, but they are the most practical choice if you travel a lot or are suffering from chronic body pain.
Using a Neck Pillow
- First, recline your seat as far back as you can without bothering the person sitting behind you. Falling asleep and sitting up straight do not usually go well together, and that can put a lot of pressure on your lower back.
- Place your pillow underneath your head down to your neck.
- To use your neck pillow correctly, make sure that the pillow supports the entire width of your head and neck.
- If you are using a U-shaped pillow, you can also place it in the opposite direction, or the arch facing you instead of sitting on the back of your neck. This gives the chin something to prop on so your head doesn’t fall forward as you sleep.
- If you have a microbead pillow, you can move the beads or stuffing around and push them to the areas you prefer to give you the most comfortable position.
Using a Neck Pillow For Chronic Pain
Neck pillows are not just for people who travel. The right ones can be excellent for neck support if someone is suffering from neck and/or back problems and other chronic pains. To find the correct neck support pillow here is what you should do:
- Find the one that fits you best. A pillow can’t support your neck if it’s too big or too small for you. It should be just the right size and should grasp on the back of your neck without being constricting.
- The pillow should be soft and comfortable yet firm. Something that is too hard might only hurt your neck further, and a pillow that is too soft will defeat the purpose of using a neck pillow altogether. It should be right in the middle and be able to hold your neck and head in place.
- The neck pillow should be placed at the back of your neck correctly. Incorrect placement will just be as bad as sleeping without a neck support pillow, and will still cause you pain.
- If you sleep on your back, the neck support pillow should have your head tilted backward or forward a little. If you sleep on your side, your nose should be kept in line with the center of your body by the pillow.
